Beijing in the north of China, Shanghai in the east, Shenyang in the north-east, Beijing has a population of 21.5 million people. Tianjin, personal historic and cultural center of Beijing, has an area of 3500 km2 (1420 sq mi). It serves as a national political, cultural and economic centre for China, housing Tianjin University and Tianjin Institute of Technology. The city also hosts the 11th largest container port in the world., and is an industrial base as well as a major transportation hub for northern China.The town of Tanggu along the coast is one of China's first special economic zones. The city houses several foreign embassies and is home to a number of historical sites dating back to ancient China, including two UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the Imperial Canal and the Great Wall of China. The city also houses the Port of Tianjin, one of the largest and busiest ports in the world. The coastal city of Ningbo is an old port town and a well-known historical and cultural city along China's ancient Grand Canal, as well as one of China's first open economic pilot zones.
